The Night of Doubt: A Ramadan tradition

Par dans Articles le February 5, 2025

Ramadan is a sacred month that occupies a central place in Islam, punctuated by fasting, prayer and the reading of the Koran. But before this month of blessings begins or ends, a crucial moment draws the attention of Muslims: the Night of Doubt. What is this night? Why is it so important? We decipher it all together!

What is the Night of Doubt according to the Koran?

The Night of Doubt is the evening before the first day of Ramadan and before Eid al-Fitr. Its purpose? To determine with certainty whether the month of Ramadan begins or ends, based on moon sightings.

In Islam, the Hegirian calendar is lunar, meaning that the months begin and end with the appearance of the crescent moon. This tradition is directly inspired by the Koran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who taught us:

“Fast at the sight of it (the moon) and break the fast at the sight of it. And if it is hidden by clouds, then complete the month to thirty days.” (Hadith reported by Muslim and Bukhari)

How is the Night of Doubt observed?

Moon gazing: A practice rooted in the Koran

On the Night of Doubt, the religious authorities scan the sky for the crescent moon. If the crescent is visible, the month begins; if not, the month is completed to 30 days.

In the Koran, Allah reminds us of the importance of lunar cycles:

“They ask you about the new moons – Say: they are used by people to count time, and also for Hajj.” (Sura 2, verse 189)

Thus, the Night of Doubt is a time of vigilance and patience for the Muslim community.

Differences between countries in the application of the Night of Doubt

Some countries rely solely on local moon sightings, while others follow decisions made by Saudi Arabia or other Muslim countries. This variation explains why some communities begin or end Ramadan on slightly different dates.

Why is the Night of Doubt important for Muslims?

A night of faith and patience, in accordance with the Koran

The Night of Doubt reminds us of the importance of patience and trust in Allah. It’s a time of gathering, prayer and supplication to begin or end the month of Ramadan. It strengthens the unity of Muslims and encourages us to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet.

An essential benchmark for fasting and Eid

Without the Night of Doubt, it’s impossible to know for sure when to start or stop fasting! That’s why it remains an essential part of Ramadan.
